AWP involved in dementia delay drug

Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Trust’s clinical trials centre, the Kingshill Research Centre, has been involved in trialling a new drug which may cut the rate of progression in a third of people with early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Kingshill’s participation with the study has spanned five years. Emma Murray, Clinical Trial Administrator, said: “When the study started in 2010 we recruited ten patients who participated in a monthly infusion. We are now about to enter the next phase of the study and look forward to being able to give more service users the opportunity to be involved in dementia research studies.”

The Kingshill Research Centre specialises in trialling dementia drugs. The team has been involved in most clinical trials for drugs routinely used by people with a dementia diagnosis. Clinical trials help evaluate the safety and effectiveness of new drugs, as well as looking at combinations of new and existing drugs or how they work in other conditions.
