Channel 4 documentary shows how Deep Brain Stimulation helps patients with movement disorders

Channel 4’s documentary, ‘Can You Rebuild My Brain?’ shown on 30 January gave an insight into how the pioneering Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) procedure can improve people’s lives.

DBS is a type of surgery that helps control movement symptoms for patients with Parkinson’s, tremor and dystonia. It is only carried out a small number of specialist centres in the UK, including North Bristol NHS Trust.

The documentary featured one of our local Deep Brain Stimulation Nurses, who contributes to the Movement Disorders Health Integration Team (MOVE HIT). From the perspective of a patient, the documentary looks at the many novel ways science is being used to help people with neurological conditions.

MOVE HIT wants to increase the number of people able to access and benefit from this advanced treatments. They have been making a pathway that is accessible to all relevant healthcare professionals to show how best to support patients about to undergo DBS surgery.
