Science Quarter launches at North Bristol Trust

North Bristol NHS Trust’s new Science Quarter forms an integral part of the new development at Southmead Hospital, following the launch of the £430 million state of the art Brunel building in April 2014. The Science Quarter enables scientists and clinicians to work closely together, bringing to life the clinical research that will be put into practice not just at North Bristol Trust, but potentially impacting NHS clinical practice across the UK.

The official launch of the Science Quarter took place on 20 May, to coincide with International Clinical Trials day. Members of the public had a rare opportunity to have a peek inside the Bristol University Laboratories and the Severn Pathology Laboratories at Southmead Hospital.

North Bristol Trust’s Chief Executive Andrea Young and BBC Radio presenter Ali Vowels introduced the afternoon’s activities, followed by short presentations showcasing the breadth of education and research across the hospital and how science is revolutionising healthcare.

Attendees looked around the showcase area, where researchers were on hand to talk about their projects in more detail.

There were various tours where attendees could see first-hand some of the amazing work taking place, including a tour of the new patient clinical research centre led by dedicated research nurses.
